My Opinions about Harry Potter and the Romance

Back in the summer of 2005, I was interview by Ursula about my thoughts of the romance of Harry Potter for her Harry Potter Ph. D project that was presented at the Accio Conference in Reading, England. Here is a transcipt of that interview. Please do not take without my permission.

Q: How did you first come up with the idea to create a website on Harry Potter and romance?
A: Um... Well, I was mostly influence by the fansites of Harry and Hermione and Ron and Hermione. I wanted to make a site to Ron and Hermione, but while I was on the subway during my visit in New York City, I thought it would be a better idea to make my site all about the ships. Then, when I came back from my trip, I started Yule Ball.

Q: From your perspective, what kind of literary genredoes the HP-seriesbelongto - and maybe you could add a few arguments? (romance, school story, crime novel, detective story, adolescent story, horror, fantasy, science fiction, fairytale?)
A: For some odd reason, each time the book is published, I'm always the same age as Harry. Take the 6th book as an example. I'm 16 now and so is Harry, so personally, I feel it's more of adolescent story with the usual good vs evil put in there to make the story have an intersting plot line.

Q: Is there a lot of romance in HP? If so, where do you find it?(characters, episodes, locations, nature, dialogues, language, etc.)
A: Well, yea, I think there are a lot of romance. Yule Ball is a huge event and so many couples formed after that. I guess the tone of dialongue and the little hints that Rowling does in her narratives shows the romance in some ways.

Q: Is romance in HP important for Harry's generation only? What about the grown-up characters?
A: Well, since the book is the author perspective of what Harry thinks and feels, I think in many ways the romance in the book is usually in Harry's generation because usually that's what teenagers usually think about: 'Bob's dating sally?' However, you do get some romance in the grown up characters like the parents of Harry's friends...

Q: For which age-group are HP-novels suitable? Why?
A: Um.. teenagers.. I think, since Harry is going though adolesence, a teenage audience would feel more related to Harry and what Harry is going though. However, like I said above, I'm kind of growing up with Harry, so I'm part of that audience..

Q: Do you like reading romance novels in general?
A: Depends on the book. I would never read those romance book that are usually showed in teh grocery store, but I do like reading books like Shopaholic and books by Meg Cabot.

Q: Do you read a lot of HP fan fiction?
A: I used too, but I don't have time to read them anymore.

Q: Do you think the movies show more or less romance than the books? Why?
A: Way more romance. Personally, I didn't know anything was going on between Ron and Hermione until the fourth book. In the movies, the 2nd movie indicate a little tension, which for me is just weird. The whole handshake thing... Then the 3rd book has way too much of that, which I felt was also weird, since Ron and Hermione have been fighting all that year.

Q: And a few short questions: How much time do you spend updating your website?
A: depends on my mood...If im in the mood, an hr - all day. If I'm not, I dont do anything.. Personally, my site has been ignored for a long time before.

Q: How much time do you spend reading fan fiction?
A: Um.. not that much. It depends if I found a fic I like. Sadly, I can't find the fics I like anymore...

Q: How much time do you spend chatting about HP?
A: Um.. not that much. I used to talk about it with my friends, but we kind of moved on from that.

Q: How important is it to discuss romance in HP with other readers?
A: More ideas I guess, but personally, it kind of feels like a political debate because some of the readers I knew thought differently than i did.

Q: And last, not least: What are your ships?
A: Ron and Hermione! hahahaha... That's about it!
